This program is designed for physicians in residency or fellowship.  This stipend program is designed to augment/supplement your program salary to help ease the economic burden of being a resident/fellow especially in higher cost of living areas. While in your GME there are no military obligations other than to focus on graduating from your current program and earning your board certification.  Your military duties and obligations commence afterward. 
 
Support Yourself During Residency With a Monthly Stipend

Get a monthly stipend while in residency with the Specialized Training Assistance Program (STRAP), in exchange for serving in the Army Reserve.

This program could be for you if you are currently in residency in one of these fields:

  • Medical
    • Preventive Medicine 
    • Urology
    • Pulmonary/ Critical Care
    • Psychiatry
    • General Surgery
    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Thoracic Surgery
    • Neurosurgey

STRAP Provides you with: 

  • a monthly Stipend of $2,728
  • $250,000 in Medical Student Loan Repayment

Requirements for STRAP: 

  • Commitment to Serve Part-Time in the US Army Reserve


Grants to Pursue Higher Education Before Joining the Army

The Financial Assistance Program (FAP) provides yearly grants and monthly stipends to applicants.

This program could be for you if you are in one of these fields:

  • Medical
    • Preventive Medicine
    • Anesthesiology
    • Psychiatry
    • Internal Medicine/ Hospital Medicine
    • Family Medicine/ Primary Care Medicine
    • General Surgery
    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Thoracic Surgery
    • Emergency Care Medicine

FAP provides you with:

  • An annual grant of $45K
  • A monthly stipend of $2,728
  • Medical School Loan Repayment of $120,000

Requirements for FAP:

  • Commitment to serve active duty in the Army after finishing your education

Let the Army Pay Back Your Student Loans

If you took out loans to pay for your health care education, the Army could pay them back as part of the Health Professions Loan Repayment Program.

This program could be for you if you are in one of these fields:

  • Medical

This program provides you with:

  • $120,000 (FAP; Active Duty/Full Time) or $250,000 (STRAP; Reserve/Part Time) in repayment of a qualifying loan, paid back to the lending institution, depending on the medical specialty and Army status
