The VA Pacific Islands Health Care System provides access to patient care to over 130,000 veterans across a 2.6M square mile area of the Pacific Ocean. Remote Island locations, separated by great distances of ocean, is the environment in which the VAPIHCS delivers a full range of comprehensive health care services. The VAPIHCS operates seven community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) covering seven county areas. These outpatient clinics are in America Samoa, Guam, Hilo, Kauai, Kona, Leeward, and Maui. VAPIHCS is a Level 3 facility within the VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21).

The Dermatology Physician (MD/DO) is administratively and clinically responsible to the Specialty Care Physician Supervisor. The physician, as a member of the specialty care department within the Akaka VA clinic, communicates with other healthcare providers to manage consults and additional services as required. The physician will work in a team setting with other physicians, nurse practitioners, clinical pharmacists, registered nurses, and support staff assigned to perform duties to accomplish the treatment of Veteran patients. Other duties may include contributions to quality assurance and performance improvement committees, education of staff, and other activities that support clinical operations and the mission, values and goals of the VA and the Medical Center.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Clinical practice, supervising and teaching fellows, residents and medical students in the specialty of Dermatology.
  • Providing consultation to non-dermatology services for patients with dermatology concerns.
  • Providing outpatient dermatology consultations and clinic appointments for Veterans with a variety of dermatology concerns.
  • Performing standard dermatology procedures.
  • Interact with patients to obtain relevant clinical history and physical exam findings within the scope of dermatology practice, while providing education to patients and issue disclosures when appropriate.
  • Ensuring that treatment is safe, timely, efficient, efficacious, evidence-based, and patient centered.
  • Ensuring that patients receive appropriate follow-up for patients with dermatology concerns.
  • Other duties as assigned by Specialty Care Physician Supervisor, CMO or Designee.
