The Oklahoma City VA Healthcare System (OCVAHCS) is seeking applications for the position of staff physician Hematology & Oncology program. The position would require obtaining affiliation with an academic institution affiliate, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. We're seeking a board certified, full-time permanent hospital employed physician to join our Hematology/Oncology department at the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center Hospital. Our ideal candidate will enjoy clinical practice and teaching and be board certified in Oncology, Hematology certification desirable. We are specifically seeking someone to focus on solid tumors with GI and sarcoma/melanoma as well as hematology. Join a department that is expanding to better serve Veteran patients!

 

Our Staff Physicians have a major teaching role within the division, including its fellowship program. Academic opportunities also include serving as principal investigator of clinical trials in the field of interest or specialization, administrative oversight of regulatory requirements and compliances with IRB regulations in human research, development of a specialty oncology program, clinical and basic science research efforts. The position includes a major role in the clinical, research, administrative and educational programs of the Hematology/Oncology Section. The physician will take part in supervision and education of fellows and residents, participate in didactic sessions, conferences and give presentations and lectures to trainees. Our physicians provide educational training for Hematology/Oncology Fellows, Internal Medicine Residents and Students. Applicants must be eligible for appointment at the VA. The ideal candidate for the staff physician positions will be suitable for academic appointment at the University of Oklahoma at the level of assistant, associate, or full professor, as evidenced by a strong track record of academic and/or clinical excellence. The clinical activities of the Section of Hematology/Oncology span the breath of the subspecialty and are strongly supported by surgery, pathology, radiology, and the other faculty members of medicine service. Additional responsibilities includes;

  • Attending required staff meetings, communicating up and down the chain of command, and helping prepare heads-up and issue briefs related to adverse patient outcomes.
  • Clinical Management including indirect patient care: open encounter and open consult maintenance, CPRS documentation requirements, monitoring of clinic management. Maintains involvement in matters concerning clinic productivity, relevant performance measures, Quality and Patient Safety oversight, as well as process improvements (system redesigns).
  • Patient Care: Practitioners are expected to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life.
  • Medical/Clinical Knowledge: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and social sciences, and the application of their knowledge to patient care and the education of others.
  • Clinical Judgment: To ensure practice-based learning and improvement, practitioners are expected to be able to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care.
  • Professionalism: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, and understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward their patients, their profession.
  • Systems-Based Practice: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate both an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided, and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve optimizing health care.
  • If the incumbent is involved in research, they will show an ability to identify and define significant Research and Development problems, to plan and execute a precise research program, and to generate effective reports and results worthy of publication.

 

The OCVAMC is in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and is the Flagship for the Oklahoma VA Health Care System (OCVAHCS) - a Joint Commission accredited, referral level 1a (high complexity) facility. The Hematology & Oncology Section serves patients across the spectrum of inpatient and outpatient care for more than 63,000 veterans in an area that includes 48 counties in Oklahoma and 2 counties in North Central Texas. Work Schedule

Full-time, Monday-Friday 08:00-4:30

  • U.S. Citizens receive preference - non-U.S. Citizens may be considered.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
  • Board Certified in Hematology & Oncology preferred, but Board Eligibility may also be considered. Additional board certification in Internal Medicine is preferred.

The starting pay is $350,000- $400,000 per year.

  • A recruitment incentive will be offered, and there is the potential for an annual performance bonus of up to $15,000.
  • Retirement: Federal Retirement Plan through the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) - A three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits; 2) FERS-FRAE basic benefits (pension); and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan, with up to 5% government matching contributions

  • Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
  • CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
