Position Details:

The VA Tampa Healthcare System is actively recruiting a Board Certified or Board Eligible physician in Emergency Medicine to help care for our Veterans - Americas Heroes.

Practice Highlights: Our Emergency Department is a section under the Medical Service at the James Haley Veterans Hospital (JAHVH). We have over 30 ER staff physicians and 12 Intermediate Care Technicians which the Chief will oversee. The Emergency Department runs an urgent care center daily from 8 AM to 6 PM on weekdays and 10 am to 6 PM on weekends and holidays. There are night team physicians who work the overnight shifts for every day of the week and we also have fee basis physicians who assist with gaps in the schedule. These fee basis physicians include internal medicine chief residents and fellows from the University of South Florida Department of Internal Medicine, as well as ER physicians from the community. We have full internal medicine and surgical services in the JAHVH which is a 1A complex VA facility. There are numerous training programs in the hospital who will see patients in the Emergency Room.

Duties and responsibilities include, but is not limited to: 

  • The Chief of the Emergency Department will be expected to be 60 percent clinical in their assignment.
  • Chief will report to the Chief of Medicine as direct report.
  • Chief will be expected to work closely in interdisciplinary fashion with the ER Nursing team.
  • Chief will be expected to attend important organizational meetings.
  • Chief will review all fee basis provider work along with the help of the ER supervisors.
  • Chief will work to develop the skills of his 3 ER supervisors. 

Work Schedule: Compressed 10-hour workdays except there will be one weekend a month with assigned duty (schedule will be shifted at that time), (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs. This also includes participation in On-Call coverage for evenings, weekends and holidays).
