The Surgical Service Section of the Reno VA Medical Center provides thoracic surgical care in outpatient and inpatient settings throughout the facility. Assess, stabilize, and determine the disposition of patients with emergent and elective thoracic conditions consistent with medical staff policy regarding emergency and consultative call services.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Evaluate and treat thoracic surgery emergencies in the emergency department, inpatient wards, ICU and operating room
• Provide quality outpatient care in accordance with approved clinical privileges.
• Maintain a high degree of excellence in clinical outcomes while providing efficient patient care throughout
• Maintain professional competency, courtesy and flexibility and provide the necessary services of this specialty.
• Attend and participate in outpatient clinics and take an active role in the evaluation of the patient, decision for treatment/care, and complete timely documentation in the patient electronic records.
• Collaborative patient management along with the other departments and sections of the hospitals including, but not limited to, laboratory, Medicine, Radiology, and the auxiliary services.

Participation in the teaching programs of the University of Nevada, School of Medicine. Provide educational opportunities for students of medicine, physician assistant, nursing and pharmacy Schools. Residents in training in medicine, surgery, psychiatry and family practice may also receive instruction from Surgical Service staff.

Provide training and/or direction as applicable to supporting employees (e.g. RNs, LPNs, technicians, administrative support staff) assigned to the unit during the performance of duties. Such direction and interaction will adhere to government and professional clinical standards and accepted clinical protocol.
