The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at The University of Kansas Health System is seeking a Skull Base Surgeon-Scientist of exceptional potential and emerging scholarship, to enhance and build upon our research and educational portfolio.  The position will be at the associate and/or professor level. The candidate will also hold the title of Vice Chair of Research and be a recipient of an endowed professorship of Skull Base Surgery.

Job Duties:

  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and oversight to researchers within the Otolaryngology department, including clinical faculty, basic science researchers, and trainees at all levels.
  • Work closely with the department research administrator on management of grants and clinical trial contracts ensuring the appropriate spend down and study closure plans are in place.

  • Co-lead weekly departmental research meetings and lead overall research strategy.
  • Understand research funding environment and help researchers pursue grant opportunities with greatest likelihood of success.
  • Upon request, provide grant scientific review and constructive feedback for upcoming grant submissions.
  • Assist faculty and trainees with identifying multidisciplinary collaborators to bolster their study teams and increase the scientific rigor of grant proposals.

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery has a robust portfolio of clinical research and has been ranked within the top 32 of Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research rankings for NIH funding among otolaryngology departments across the country. The Department is highly collaborative with partners across the University of Kansas system and enjoys a national reputation as a leader in otolaryngology.  Our research portfolio spans all subspecialties, including investigator-initiated trials in hearing loss, outcomes research in head and neck cancer, novel applications of olfactory biomarkers to diagnose neurocognitive disorders, and artificial intelligence and machine learning applications to advance healthcare delivery research.  In addition, the candidate will join a clinically productive academic department that includes seven sub-specialty divisions in otorhinolaryngology consisting of twenty-four clinicians, three clinical fellows, and five advanced practice providers.  Community practice sites include The University of Kansas Health System as well as our affiliate sites of the Kansas City Missouri Veterans Administration, University Health, all in Kansas City.

Required Qualifications:

  • M.D., M.D./Ph.D., D.O., or equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited training program in Otolaryngology
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Otolaryngology
  • Fellowship in Rhinology or Neurotology preferred
  • Successful track record of research activities, publication and funding
  • Eligible for medical licensure in Kansas and Missouri
