Job Description

Join our Team at the Department of Veterans Affairs Community Based Outpatient Clinic, Eureka, CA as an Optometrist!

Optometry is the healthcare profession that specializes in the diagnosis and nonsurgical management of disorders of the eye, ocular adnexa, and visual system.

Duties include the following:

  • Examination of eye, lids, adnexa, and visual system
  • Diagnosis, management, and treatment of refractive errors and abnormalities of binocular function
  • Prescription of ophthalmic prosthetic devices including spectacle lenses, contact lenses, and low vision devices
  • Treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the eye, eyelids, adnexa, and the glaucomas
  • Prescription of all topical ophthalmic pharmaceutical agents and oral pharmaceutical agents limited to antibiotics, antivirals, antihistamines, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, non-opioid analgesics, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, vitamins, and minerals
  • Removal of superficial conjunctival and corneal foreign bodies
  • Epilation of eyelashes
  • Dilation and irrigation of the nasolacrimal system
  • Utilization of ancillary testing including ocular photography, ultrasonography, ocular coherence tomography, corneal topography, and biometry
  • Order of appropriate laboratory and radiology testing
  • Acquisition of corneal and conjunctival cultures
  • Consultation, referral and co-management of appropriate patients with ophthalmologists and other physician subspecialists as outlined by the specific care coordination agreements of the San Francisco VA Medical Center

Additional duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Outpatient optometric services
  • Inpatient optometric services
  • Department of Veteran Affairs nursing home or community living center optometric services
  • Ongoing prevention, in-service, and patient education programs
  • Supervision, teaching, and training of students and residents enrolled in affiliated programs
  • Maintenance and upkeep of clinic logs, patient medical charts, and other documents necessary to the operation of Ophthalmology Section Clinics

  Benefits and Features

Expected Salary range from $86K to $186K (negotiable based on candidate's qualifications, credentials and experience).

Work Schedule: 08:00am-04:30pm, Mon-Fri
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure:
 Full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
