The Ward Family Heart Center at Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, is seeking a preventive pediatric cardiologist. The successful candidate would join an existing group of 45 cardiologists, 4 surgeons, and 30 Advanced Practice Providers.  Experience and interest in Preventive Cardiology is a must.

The Preventive Cardiology program is a large volume service providing comprehensive care for children with dyslipidemia and associated atherosclerosis promoting risk factors, referrals come from the metropolitan Kansas City, outlying areas and adjoining states. The clinic is staffed by nutritionists and exercise physiologists in addition to cardiologists with niches in clinical / outcomes research /clinical pharmacology. Vascular, physical fitness and genetic testing are provided as needed. The service closely aligns with other subspecialties within the hospital including Endocrinology, Nephrology, Liver and Weight Management.

While the cornerstone of management is lifestyle education / counseling we manage all types of lipid-modifying therapies. Trainees at all levels rotate providing multiple educational opportunities. Clinical and outcomes research activities stemming from this service over the years have resulted in multiple grant funding, mentoring and collaborative opportunities, numerous publications, national presentations and high-profile media exposure. A track record of academic interest in Preventive Cardiology or a 4th year fellowship training is highly desirable to sustain such efforts. The successful candidate will have ample opportunities to develop curricula, algorithms and participate / initiate quality and research projects. Involvement in regional and national community and advocacy efforts through professional organizations are highly encouraged.

The Children’s Mercy Heart Center serves a population of over 5 million in the heart of the U.S.A. We perform over 500 cardiac operations, 600 cardiac catheterizations including over 200 invasive EP procedures, 18,000 outpatient visits, and more than 20,000 echocardiograms annually. Our two state-of the art catheterization labs are both hybrid labs and equipped with the latest 3D imaging and EP technology. Telehealth is available and facilitates our outreach clinics. We have video-conferencing capabilities that are routinely used by providers from distant locations to dial into our conferences for patient care and education. In 2024, the Ward Family Heart Center program was ranked nationally by USNWR.

Our Kansas City-based super-specialty resources include Electrophysiology (which includes Clinical EP, pacing and Genetic Arrhythmia), Exercise Physiology and Metabolic Lab, Cardiac Transplantation/Advanced Cardiac Therapies, Interventional Cardiology and Advanced Cardiac Imaging (fetal echo, 3D echo, trans-esophageal echo, CT, MRI and 3D printing). We also provide specialized, team-based care in Fetal Cardiology (with on-site delivery services for high-risk neonates in Kansas City), Interstage Monitoring (Cardiac High Acuity Monitoring Program), Preventive Cardiology, Cardiac Genetics, Cardio-oncology, Single Ventricle Survivorship, Pulmonary Hypertension, a dedicated complex syncope  clinic and Cardiac Neurodevelopmental services. For both postgraduate students and practicing physicians, Children’s Mercy fellowships act as the springboard for excellence in a subspecialty field. Our 40-plus programs are fully integrated into our subspecialty departments and clinical service areas, where complex cases meet uncommon support. The Department of Cardiology has three categorical fellows, a forth year Advanced Imaging Fellow and Pediatric CV surgery fellow.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD or DO, Pediatric Cardiology Trainees in their final year are welcome to apply
  • Board Certification in Pediatrics
  • Board Eligible or Certified in Pediatric Cardiology
  • Strong Communication Skills
  • Interest in Preventive Cardiology

Academic rank (Assistant, Associate, or Professor) and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
