Job Title: Geriatric Psychiatrist – Inpatient Senior Behavioral Health Unit

Position Type: Full-Time, Employed (Monday – Friday schedule)

Practice Setting: Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry Unit

Unit Overview: Join our collaborative team at the Senior Behavioral Health Unit (SBHU), a dedicated 24-bed inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit at Roxborough Memorial Hospital, a trusted community hospital serving northwest Philadelphia and surrounding areas for over 130 years. The unit specializes in short-term, voluntary inpatient care for adults aged 65 and older experiencing acute behavioral health needs, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and other geriatric mental health conditions. With an average daily census of approximately 20 patients, the unit provides a supportive, patient-centered environment focused on stabilization, coping skills development, family education, and safe discharge planning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment for geriatric inpatients with complex medical and psychiatric comorbidities.
  • Lead daily interdisciplinary rounds and collaborate closely with nursing staff, social workers, therapists, and other clinicians to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Manage psychopharmacology, including medication adjustments tailored to geriatric sensitivities (e.g., polypharmacy, renal/hepatic considerations, fall risk).
  • Conduct capacity assessments, address behavioral disturbances, and coordinate with medical consultants as needed for co-occurring physical health issues.
  • Participate in family meetings, discharge planning, and ensure smooth transitions to outpatient care or appropriate post-acute settings.
  • Document timely and accurately in the electronic health record system.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and unit protocols focused on geriatric behavioral health best practices.

Schedule & Work-Life Balance:

  • Monday through Friday daytime schedule (no mandatory weekends or overnights).
  • Predictable hours with flexibility to support excellent work-life balance.
  • On-call coverage (if any) is handled equitably within the team or program structure.

Qualifications:

  • Board certification or board eligibility in Psychiatry (ABPN).
  • Fellowship training or significant experience in Geriatric Psychiatry strongly preferred.
  • Active Pennsylvania medical license (or eligibility to obtain).
  • DEA license with ability to prescribe controlled substances.
  • Strong clinical skills in geriatric psychopharmacology and managing complex, multimorbid patients.
  • Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration abilities.
  • Commitment to compassionate, patient- and family-centered care for older adults.
