Urgent Care Physician Role Overview:

The Urgent Care Physician (UCP) supports the health care delivery mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Services will be provided Monday-Saturday between the hours of 8:00 am - 6:00 pm, but are subject to change based on the needs of the facility. The UCP will be required to participate in the back-up call schedule used during disaster events, surge events, and shift coverage emergencies. On rare occasions, the UCP may be called to cover night/overnight shifts during disaster events.

The UCP will collaborate with other Medical Services as appropriate and may assist with projects related to their area of specialty, expertise, and interests, relevant to VA directives and policies. These projects may support research or respond to requests by the Medical Center Director/Chief of Staff.

The UCP must be a physician board certified or board eligible in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, or Internal Medicine, and must have completed a qualifying residency. Preferably, candidates will have experience in urgent care or emergency department settings. The UCP must demonstrate competency in higher acuity practice standards and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. They will also be required to directly participate in any pandemic-related patient care regardless of age, medical conditions, or other personal risk factors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide timely and effective evaluation and treatment of acute medical issues in an urgent care setting.
  • Order, perform, and interpret appropriate diagnostics and therapeutic procedures.
  • Coordinate with primary care providers, specialists, and ancillary staff as needed for follow-up and continuity of care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, case discussions, and quality improvement activities.
  • Maintain clear, thorough, and timely documentation in compliance with VA standards.
  • Mentor and educate resident physicians, medical students, and support staff as applicable.
  • Ensure compassionate, veteran-centered care with sensitivity and respect for Hawaii’s diverse populations.
