Successful candidates must have an MD or DO degree (foreign educational equivalents are considered) and be eligible for state medical licensure. Candidates must have completed a neurosurgery residency program, pediatric neurosurgery fellowship, and be board certified/board eligible in pediatric neurosurgery. All qualifications must be met by the time of appointment.
The Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery joins in the collaborative efforts of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, which is made up of a team of over 280 dedicated faculty in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry. RNI provides compassionate patient care and advanced medicine through education, research, and outreach in the many diverse communities we serve. The Institute spearheads efforts to develop innovative solutions for neurological and psychiatric conditions across the lifespan.
WVU Medicine maintains 2 Level IV Comprehensive Epilepsy Programs both for Adults and for Children. The Epilepsy Center includes hardwired video-EEG monitoring units. The facility also features neuroimaging support including spectroscopic MRI and functional MRI and quantitative PET scans.
Our new WVU Medicine Golisano Childrens Hospital opened in September 2022 and is the premier site within the state for primary through tertiary care of children. The WVU Medicine Golisano Childrens Neuroscience Center as part of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute consists of the divisions of child neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, psychology, neuropsychology, neurodevelopment, neuroradiology, neuro-oncology, physiatry and rehabilitation medicine. The Childrens Neuroscience Center and WVU Health System maintain a Cerebral Palsy and Spasticity Clinic, Level IV Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Neurodevelopmental Center, movement disorders and telehealth programs. The department of neurology and division of child neurology have close working relationships with colleagues in the pediatric surgical subspecialties, child and adolescent behavioral medicine/ neuropsychology, physiatry and rehabilitation, and neuroradiology. This focus on comprehensive care embodies the WVU Medicine Golisano Childrens commitment to providing excellent clinical care to the children of West Virginia, a collegial academic environment that fosters professional growth, and high-quality teaching to our students and house staff.
WVU Medicine Golisano Childrens has a full suite of pediatric operating rooms, cardiac catheterization lab/interventional radiology, GI-endoscopy with dedicated pediatric anesthesia staff, and the only epilepsy monitoring unit in the state equipped to serve children. The hospital includes a Pediatric acute care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, Imaging Department, Heart Center and Blood Disorder and Cancer Center. WVU Medicine Golisano Childrens is a Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, with plans to become Level 1, as it is for adults currently. We have a Birthing Center and maternal-fetal medicine clinic. WVU Medicine Golisano Childrens is the only hospital in West Virginia with a pediatric cardiac surgery program, ECMO program, level IV NICU and the only hospital in the state to receive Magnet status for nursing excellence.
