Why Veteran Healthcare versus Private Sector?

  • Integrated, Coordinated Care across the Continuum: Our highly integrated healthcare system allows geriatricians to follow Veterans seamlessly across outpatient, inpatient, long-term care, home-based, and hospice settings. Shared electronic health records, national care protocols, and case management teams facilitate care coordinationfeatures that are often fragmented in private-sector practice.
  • Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Teams: The team-based approachcore to VAenables holistic, patient-centered management of complex older adults and is less consistently available or supported in private practices
  • Access to VA-Specific Resources and Programs: VA offers nationally recognized programs such as Community Living Centers (CLC/nursing homes), Home-Based Primary Care, Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Centers (GRECCs), and other extended care models that arent widely available in the private sector.
  • No Billing or Insurance Hassles: VA physicians do not bill patients or deal with insurance reimbursement, allowing more time for direct patient care and less administrative burden than private practice or fee-for-service models.
  • Opportunities for Teaching, Research, and Innovation: Academic affiliation with highly regarded institutions of higher learning, supporting robust teaching, clinical trials, and quality improvement in geriatrics. This academic integration and research infrastructure is more challenging to find in most private-sector practices.
