A physician who has the responsibility of caring for a child who is in an unstable or critical condition is a pediatric critical care physician. Any illness or injury that is life-threatening is handled by this type of physician. Conditions that may be seen by a physician in pediatric critical care include severe infections, critical injuries from accidents, a patient suffering from a near drowning experience, a brain trauma patient, a patient dealing with a severe heart condition, or possibly a case of hypothermia in a child. Monitoring, management, and treatment of these critical situations in child patients are all duties of a pediatric critical care physician.
