The Cleveland Clinic is recruiting a “Patients First” academic clinical pathologist or doctoral-level clinical microbiologist to join the Professional Staff of Cleveland Clinic as a Medical Director of Microbiology. The Section of Microbiology is within the Division of Laboratory Medicine, which is part of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. The Section is comprised of a forward-thinking collaborative team, which includes 120 medical laboratory scientists and four medical directors. This posting is recruiting for a fifth medical director.

The Microbiology Section provides infectious disease diagnostic support within the Cleveland Clinic Health System (CCHS) and serves as the consolidated microbiology laboratory for CCHS hospitals throughout Northeast Ohio and reference laboratory for Cleveland Clinic hospitals in Florida. The Microbiology Section collaborates closely with Infectious Diseases, Infection Prevention, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Laboratory Stewardship. Areas within the Section include specimen processing & rapid testing, virology, bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and molecular microbiology. The successful candidate will direct the specimen processing & rapid testing area of the Microbiology Section, which is anticipating adoption of increased automation, rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing technologies, and artificial intelligence software for analysis of digital microscopic images. There are additional opportunities depending on interest and expertise to be involved in bacteriology directorship, education, sponsored research, and anatomic pathology infectious disease consultations. Candidates must be board-certified or eligible by the American Board of Pathology and/or the American Board of Medical Microbiology with formal training in clinical microbiology. Microbiologists at any career stage are welcome to apply.

Academic opportunities include clinical, translational, and collaborative research; and the Microbiology Section employs medical laboratory scientists that are exclusively dedicated to these research endeavors. Teaching opportunities include medical laboratory science students, medical students, and physician residents & fellows.
