Department of Anesthesiology

The Cleveland Clinic Department of Anesthesiology is one of the largest anesthesiology departments in the country. The department provides clinical care, education, research, and resuscitation services in northeast Ohio, and works collaboratively with colleagues in Florida, Abu Dhabi, and London. The department in northeast Ohio provides anesthetic care in 200 ORs and more than 100 non-OR anesthesia (NORA) locations across our Main Campus, 9 regional hospitals, 7 Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs), and 4 Ambulatory Endoscopy Centers (AECs). This team provides anesthesia care to over 200,000 patients annually. Our organizational structure is an employed model, with staff anesthesiologists medically directing residents, fellows, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified anesthesiologist assistants. The mission of the Anesthesiology Department is to be a recognized leader in perioperative care through education, research, and innovation within an environment that creates a safe, effective, efficient, and best experience for our patients and caregivers. We accomplish this vision by collaborating with each other, other institutes and Departments within the Cleveland Clinic, and with outside entities.

The Division of Multispecialty Anesthesiology: provides highly specialized anesthetic care for patients having surgery in our operating rooms and procedural areas on Main Campus. These include neurosurgery, major visceral organ transplantation, ENT, cancer, orthopedic surgeries, and high-risk OB surgeries. Non OR anesthesia areas include endoscopy, interventional radiology, electrophysiology lab, bronchoscopy suite, obstetrical suite, magnetic resonance imaging, and radiation oncology. A dedicated acute pain team provides regional blocks to improve patient experience through better pain control and reduced reliance on opioids.
The Division of Multispecialty Anesthesiology consists of 75 staff anesthesiologists, 116 certified nurse anesthetists, 4 Acute Pain APPs, 4 Acute Pain RNs, 25 anesthesia technicians, 6 fellows, and 8 administrative assistants.
Multispecialty Anesthesiology performs over 64,000 anesthetics annually, 35% of which are in procedural areas outside of the main operating room pavilion. Although our faculty is qualified to provide care for all patients, the culture of the division is to pair subspecialty training and expertise with specific subspecialty surgical patient populations. Our subspecialty sections work closely with our surgical colleagues to improve patient care and outcomes of the free-standing ambulatory surgery centers, and endoscopy centers throughout NE Ohio.

Our Community Practice provides anesthesia care at 9 community hospitals, 7 ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), and 4 ambulatory endoscopy centers (AECs) throughout Northeast Ohio. The anesthesiology team is comprised of 90 Staff and over 200 Anesthetists. Community Practice Anesthesiology subspecialties include anesthesia for cardiac, thoracic, obstetrics/gynecology, neurosurgery, major vascular, orthopedics, urologic, pediatric, plastics as well as general surgery, acute pain, special procedures in radiology, emergency medicine, trauma, and gastroenterology. Our staff anesthesiologists and CRNAs/CAAs have hospital appointments across multiple hospitals, surgery centers and ambulatory endoscopy centers throughout northeast Ohio, which allows for flexible staffing that is so critical in todays environment. The community serves three submarkets (East, West, and Southern) within the Cleveland Clinic. Staffing levels are adjusted based upon clinical needs, emergent cases, personnel issues, and daily consultative and acute pain management services.

The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology provides care anesthetic care for patients undergoing cardiovascular, thoracic, and vascular surgery in the nations #1 cardiac center with over 9,000 patients served annually including structural heart interventions, valve repairs, coronary bypass, aortic surgeries, and heart and lung transplantations. This division has the largest cardiac anesthesiology fellowship program in the country and the largest specialized fellowship program among all our fellowships at Cleveland Clinic.

The Division of Surgical Critical Care provides critical care and resuscitation services for over 125 critical care beds on Main Campus, and nearly 50 critical care beds within our regional hospitals. The Division has a collaborative relationship with the SICU in Weston, Florida, and boasts its own ACGME-accredited anesthesiology critical care fellowship program (10 fellows per year) consisting of multi-specialty trainees, and a focused cardiovascular ICU dedicated non-ACGME fellowship based on Main Campus. Many anesthesiologist intensivists also work in the operating rooms and therefore coordination and collaboration between OR operations and critical care operations is an important aspect of the Vice-Chairs role.

Department of Anesthesiology Educational Programs

Subspecialized training is offered in cardiothoracic, regional/acute pain, transplant, obstetrical, pediatric, ambulatory, and neuro-anesthesia, pain management, critical care, perioperative medicine, and research. Our own Cleveland Clinic School of Nurse Anesthesia grants a DNP degree from Case Western Reserve University with 25 student nurse anesthetists per class for their 3-year education. Our own school of nurse anesthesia along with Case Westerns Nurse Anesthesia and Anesthesiology Assistant programs, and other regional nurse anesthesia programs provide opportunities to recruit CRNAs and CAAs to our Department consisting of over 400 anesthetists
