The VA Portland Health Care System (VA Portland) and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, & Critical Care Medicine seek an academic leader to join a dynamic and collaborative group of healthcare providers as Chief of the VA Portland Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine.

VA Portland is a Level 1a, state-of-the-art facility situated next to the OHSU campus overlooking the city of Portland, OR. It is home to one of VHA’s highest complexity hospitals, providing care to Oregon’s Veterans while serving as a referral center for Veterans across the Pacific Northwest. VA Portland benefits from its close and long-standing academic affiliation with OHSU. Research and educational collaborations between the two institutions are facilitated by a walkable, 210 m climate-controlled skybridge connecting the campuses.

VA Portland’s Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine Section has twenty-one full- and part-time faculty, including one medical and eight pulmonary intensivists, four pulmonologists, two interventional pulmonologists, six sleep physicians from five specialties, and a Behavioral Sleep Medicine Psychologist. In addition to clinical duties, many have significant leadership roles in research, educational and/or administrative activities at the local, regional, and national levels. Six faculty are physician-scientists whose research is funded by the NIH, VA R&D and other organizations.

Portland's population toes the line between an innocent playfulness and a shameless wild side. Naked bicycle rides, a fully costumed adult soapbox derbyand Voodoo Doughnut – a bakery known for making one-of-a-kind donuts – is a sampling of ways residents live up to the unofficial city motto: "Keep Portland Weird." Locals tend to be friendly and laid-back while maintaining a healthy work ethic. This, combined with Portland's emphasis on self-expression, has created a breeding ground for many independent businesses and startups.

Portland is a well-rounded region with more than just offbeat shops and events. Museums, art galleries and the oldest public library on the West Coast feed a population with more academic degrees than the national average. The metro area's loyal sports fans avidly support their NBA basketball team, the Portland Trail Blazers; MLS soccer team, the Portland Timbers; and major junior ice hockey team, the Portland Winterhawks.

Wilderness is also close by. Two mountain ranges and the Pacific Ocean can be reached in an hour or two, while the fertile vineyards of the Willamette Valley lure city dwellers with a thirst for something fresh.
